![]() For many years, the pen-name "Dean Hudson" was assumed to be simply a combination of several writers none of which seemed particularly distinguished. However, recently, paperback scholar Lynn Munroe began to investigate exactly who might be the true author of the "Dean Hudson" novels. Helped by the recollections of former-Greenleaf editor Earl Kemp, Munroe began honing in on the idea that New York crime writer Evan Hunter (born Salvador Lombino) may have been the man. Munroe's research was originally issued in his quarterly catalogue #49 later re-printed in Earl Kemp's excellent ezine #24. I won't paraphrase all his fine research any more than to say that Evan Hunter took the mantle of writing as "Dean Hudson," much in the same way as the other Scott Meredith writers adopted their various personas/pen-names, with the added feature that Hunter began to farm out his manuscripts to associates, girlfriends and other contacts, submitting the manuscripts through his regular channels. This would of course explain why some "Hudson" novels are better than others, and why some are barely readable. To be certain, there is still controversy over the Hunter/Hudson authorship, but for those in doubt, it is recommended that they take a read of the above sources..
