![]() Born in 1924 on the dusty prairies of Texas, Terry Southern dug jazz, smoked weed and checked out the whorehouses of nearby Deep Elum, before going off to the Army in WWII and staying on in Paris to study at the Sorbonne. While the other vets were post-warring it in the freshly-sod Stateside suburbs, Terry was doing the beatnik thing in Europe -- trying to crack into the "Big Lit" scene by penning short stories and trying to find the right persons up to whom to cozy in order to kick-start his Literary Trip. All the while, lurking and giggling in the background was his glorious goofball friendship with Mason Hoffenberg, fellow ex-pat poet who had settled nicely into the Left Bank cafe scene, even writing soft delicious porn for the only game in town, Maurice Girodias' OLYMPIA PRESS. Hoff's offhand offer for a hand on his new book turned out to be a turning point in Southern's career. As finely recounted in his son Niles' book THE CANDY MEN (see below), the two friends dug into work and promptly blew the whole thing off -- meanwhile Terry had parlayed his Olympia association into some magazine publications (THE PARIS REVIEW, ESQUIRE), shopped his other work around, and with the long-overdue completion and publication of CANDY (1958), TS began the warp-speed planting and harvesting cycle of the fruits of his genius, shaping and being shaped-by the phenomenon known as The 60s. Throughout these years, he published works of outrageous wit, sexual extravagance and astonishing lucidity about the state of society. Just as CANDY required a longer than expected gestation period, his BLUE MOVIE, a novel he spoke of throughout the 1960s, finally hit the shelves in 1970! In it, he spins the tale of the first big-budget x-rated movie with full penetration! Indeed, sexual glee was always close at hand in Terry's work, and when the novels stopped coming, he supported himself with frequent short fiction publications in various 70s and 80s adult magazines. Like Henry Miller, Terry was an inspired and inspiring writer who cherished living and revelled in the land of sex for all its power to bring joy to life. He died in 1995, but lives still!
