Harlan Ellison is known as a fierce, imaginative writer in the realms of science-fiction and in early days "juvenile-delinquent" crime fiction. Ellison is all-that and more, for the writer's life has taken him to many fascinating places and -- as we see so often on these pages -- encouraged him to fashion a persona and a pen-name to suit his various venues. Emerging from the pool of imaginative science-fiction writers at the end of the 1950s, Ellison was chosen by William Hamling to be the original editor-in-chief of his fledgling Greenleaf Books. However, Ellison did not take to the job with great relish and was replaced eventually by Earl Kemp -- instead taking on a similar role as editor of a new division of Hamling's growing publishing empire, a "clean" bookline known as REGENCY BOOKS. However, Ellison continued on with Greenleaf as the back cover blurb writer for virtually all of the Nightstand books from 1959 to 1964. Writing under the pseudonyms "Paul Merchant," "Cordwainer Byrd," and others, Ellison's writing appeared in a number of mens magazines throughout the 60s and his lone Nightstand novel SEX GANG is reported to be quite a good read -- growing out of his JD fiction background. As a powerful writer of some subversive leanings, Ellison contributed essays and afterwords to Brian Kirby's ESSEX HOUSE books as well. |
