William Hamling's publishing enterprises were a fascinating empire of pop-culture interests, from science-fiction to hard-boiled thrillers to hard-core erotica to high-minded political protest. Earl Kemp was the editor for the Greenleaf literary empire from 1964-1971 and is publishing his memoirs (along with those of contributing writers and artitsts) in a truly fascinating ongoing serial EZINE. Since the start of the publication of Nightstand Books in 1959, Greenleaf diversified its booklines to number in the dozens. (I have organized a selection of the early smaller-format books in another Greenleaf section found in the EARLY VINTAGE SLEAZE CATALOGS). Greenleaf moved its operations from its original base in Chicago to Southern California in early 1967 -- and the books shown here reflect the new look and sensibility that was in evidence from roughly the time of the California move. From that point on, the books were produced in the larger, more typical paperback-size format. And check out a special section of Pleasure Reader books here. Be sure to cross-check the "Writers" and "Artists" and "Themes" areas also! |
Here's a special
