Star Distributors

Star Distributors was a New York City-based adult book enterprise begun in 1971 under the supervision of a trio of ltalian businessmen, Robert "Dibi" DiBernardo, Theodore "Teddy" Rothstein, and Andrew "Andre" D'Apice.

While the adult publishing world is full of stories, none quite match the inner-workings of Star Distributors -- which finally resulted in the body of founder "DiBi" DiBernardo turning up in a trunk in the meadowlands of New Jersey.   Star Distributors was in business for some 14-5 years and their output was massive.   Yet, even among the dozens and dozens of individual book lines issued under the Star banner, they were all united by a shared sensibility embracing the farthest edges of sexual fantasy and experimentation.   Simply put, they are at the bottom -- the nastiest, most twisted, most sleazy of all the adult publishers.

A friend turned up a ware-house find of several dozen factory-fresh Star books of various imprints -- and I thought at first I cannot in good conscience display these!  However, in the anthropological interest which informs this website (as a source of research and reference), I will present the Star books as they come in.  Some books, however, will be restricted from sale for the present time.

It is my sincere hope that their presence on the site will be interpreted in the appropriate manner.  If you would like to weigh in on this fundamental ethical debate, please contact the booksmith.

And back to the Star Dist. history, for a moment, it is worth reading the book GHOSTS OF 42nd STREET for more information on the founding fathers.  In closing, while many publishers decry the influence of "the mob" as ruining the adult book business, Star Distributors never uttered that complaint.

See below for a selection of the booklines and click further to see the books themselves.

Be sure to cross-check the "Writers" and "Artists" and "Themes" areas also!

New books will be added as they become available.

Documentary Classics

Perhaps the earliest publications from what would be known as STAR DISTRIBUTORS were in fact books and magazines merely distributed by the New York-based Star Distribution syndicate.  The Documentary Classic publications were packaged and copyright registered by Consolidated Publishing, Inc., which was one of Cleveland-based, Reuben Sturman's adult enterpriises.  Paul H. Little (who had provided pseudonymous texts for Eddie Mishkin's First Niters/After Hours, etc. and Reuben Sturman's Chevron/Satan/Wizard, etc. book franchises) donned the identity of Dr. Guenter Klow to develop the Documentary Classic series of "non-fiction" accounts of alternative sexuality.   With the Documentary Classic series, Little/Klow presented "case studies" (a half-dosen or more per book) exploring spanking, discipline, the power-play between old and young, and a number of other curious permutations of desire.
When Sturman fully developed his own publishing imprint EROS-GOLDSTRIPE in 1971, the Documentary Classic series moved over to his new line -- with a more appealing look via the fabulous cover art of Bill Ward and Gene Eneg Bilbrew.

Click here for the Bizarre Library catalogsClick here for the Bizarre Library catalogsThe Bizarre Library adult paperbacks marked a high-point in the mass-marketing of hard-core sexual interests, such as Sado-Masochism, Domination and various Torture Fetishes.

The Star Distributors Company dug deeply into the subterranean world of the fetish authors (and fetish artists like Eric Stanton and Di Mulatto)to bring this violent universe into the mainstream of adult books.

Classic Erotica Catalog

Emerging with the collapse of censorship and legal loopholes due to untraceable and overseas copyrights, numerous publishers made hay while they could by importing (and sometime stealing) manuscripts from other pornographers who were legally hamstrung to act on infringement claims.   With these prevailing conditions, the 60s saw a spring of classic erotica flow forth in cheap and inocuous paperback editions -- Continental Classics, Classic Editions, and a slew of minor minimalist productions ... evocative of the original Obelisk Press, Olympia Press, and other verbotten European porn presses.

For those readers who did need wish to shop at adult book stores, a handful of publishers began producing "erotica" with upscale glossy photo covers from writers of perhaps more restraint and certainly more literary veneer. Pandora, Pinnacle, Blue Moon, Masquerade and others are all collected here.
